About the position

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Technology Center group in Raleigh, NC. This role focuses on research and development within the distribution transformer business, specifically in additive manufacturing. The engineer will drive innovation in metal additive manufacturing processes, develop advanced manufacturing strategies, and support the execution of R&D projects. The position requires collaboration with manufacturing facilities and participation in technical publications and conferences.

Responsibilities

  • Execution of Additive Manufacturing related R&D projects within the Distribution and Dry-Type Transformer business.
  • Drive innovation in metal AM processes for transformer components, including design optimization and material development.
  • Develop and implement advanced manufacturing strategies to enhance product performance and efficiency.
  • Conduct material characterization, data analysis, and validation of AM processes for transformer applications.
  • Support current and future research projects with emphasis on material characterization and data analysis.
  • Lead and execute R&D projects in distribution and dry-type transformer technology, focusing on additive manufacturing applications.
  • Create and optimize 3D CAD models designed for additive manufacturing (DfAM).
  • Identify and implement technology/product development strategies to enhance global positioning.
  • Participate in publications and conferences such as IEEE and Cigre.
  • Set and maintain standards of programmatic and technical requirements and documentation.
  • Support prototype builds and testing activities, analyzing results and recommending design modifications.
  • Foster an environment that encourages challenging the status quo in technical issues and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar with 5 years of related experience, or a Master's degree with 3 years of related experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in metal additive manufacturing with a focus on sustainable practices.
  • Strong background in CAD/CAE software and design for additive manufacturing (DfAM).
  • Experience with powder metallurgy and metal AM material properties.
  • Experience with metal AM technologies (DMLS, SLM, EBM).
  • Advanced understanding of additive processes and material science in additive manufacturing.
  • Good command of oral and written English language skills.
  • Ability to interact with diverse audiences and present technical concepts clearly.

Nice-to-haves

  • Deep understanding of technical aspects in multiple disciplines and ability to analyze complex projects.
  • Experience with the Gate Model Project management method and mentoring others.
  • Ability to lead risk assessments and mitigation actions at a global level.
  • Experience with topology optimization and generative design.
  • Experience with thermal and fluid flow simulation.
