About the position

Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Rail Bridge Engineer to contribute to the Rail and Transit Practice. This role involves designing and analyzing railroad bridges, collaborating with project teams, and mentoring junior engineers. The position offers flexibility in work location, including hybrid, remote, or onsite options across the company's numerous offices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform railroad bridge design and detailing tasks incorporating AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering practices.
  • Conduct structural analysis and prepare engineering calculations using design software and hand calculations.
  • Develop and implement project plans for complex projects across multiple disciplines.
  • Collaborate with project staff to outline and execute work plans, mentoring younger engineers.
  • Perform bridge condition evaluations through inspections and load ratings.
  • Lead engineering investigations, including feasibility studies with cost and risk analysis.
  • Utilize advanced bridge analysis/design software such as LEAP Products, MIDAS, Mathcad, and Excel.
  • Prepare construction plans using Microstation and specifications.
  • Review shop drawings and Contractor Requests for Information.
  • Manage work schedules to meet project deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field; Master's Degree in Structural Engineering preferred.
  • 10-15 years of experience in bridge design, rehabilitation, and construction with a railroad specialization.
  • PE license required; NCEES record is a plus.
  • Project experience with US Class I Railroads and/or local Rail Transit agencies is required.
  • Familiarity with AREMA standards is required.
  • Knowledge of CSX, NS, UP, BNSF, CPKC, and/or CN standards is desired.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing rail structure design plans and specifications.
  • Experience in construction phase services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proven rail bridge and retaining wall technical experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks or projects concurrently.
  • Strong initiative and proactive, collaborative approach to project development.
  • Strong relationships with Class I Railroads and local transit agencies.
  • Previous use of CADD software including Bentley products.
  • Experience with construction management and document control for rail construction.
