About the position

The Senior Railroad Engineer (Civil Engineer IV) position is responsible for coordinating and directing the planning and design negotiations related to railroad relocation, grade separation, and grade crossing improvements associated with highway programs in the district. This role ensures compliance with railroad standards, policies, and regulations while overseeing the execution of railroad agreements and safety programs. The engineer will also provide expert testimony and ensure the accuracy of railroad plans, contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of transportation in Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and direct the district's in-house and consultant's planning and design negotiations for railroad projects.
  • Ensure compliance with Railroad Standards and Policies, Illinois Commerce Commission regulations, and state and federal policies.
  • Oversee the execution of Railroad Agreements in accordance with the district's construction schedule.
  • Coordinate the Annual Highway-Rail Signal and Surface Safety Programs with the central office and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of railroad plans and provide expert testimony to the Illinois Commerce Commission.
  • Process Railroad Force Account work bills and audits for timely payments.
  • Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules and ensure fair treatment of all employees.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in highway design and/or construction in the state of Illinois.
  • Experience working with railroad companies.
