About the position
The Sr. Relay Protection & Studies Engineer will be responsible for developing relay settings and conducting studies related to substation protection and control design projects. This role supports large electric utility clients and renewable energy projects, including utility-scale solar farms, battery energy storage systems, and large wind farms. The position offers significant opportunities for career growth within a smaller, local team, and is fully remote.
Responsibilities
- Develop relay protection schemes using microprocessor-based relays.
- Conduct protective device coordination for transmission lines, buses, transformers, capacitor banks, circuit breakers, and reactors.
- Create logic settings to support relay schemes.
- Perform area protective device coordination studies.
- Conduct transmission level impact and feasibility studies.
- Execute load flow studies.
- Carry out short circuit studies.
- Perform insulation coordination and arc flash studies.
- Prepare reports documenting the process and results of studies performed.
- Review studies performed by others and provide constructive feedback.
- Assist clients in meeting compliance requirements.
- Mentor less experienced associates.
- Work with the Engineering Manager and Principal Engineer to define project objectives and design approaches for complex projects.
- Act as Lead Engineer on complex studies, interfacing with clients and other engineering firms.
Requirements
- 8+ years' experience in transmission power system protection studies and relay settings.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain (ideally PE).
- Experience supporting renewable interconnection projects (wind, solar, BESS).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in mentoring less experienced associates.
- Ability to conceptualize initial design approaches for major project phases.
