About the position

The Senior Research Engineer at Argonne National Laboratory will lead research efforts in industrial and building decarbonization, focusing on end-use applications. This role involves developing a research portfolio centered on heat pumps and low-carbon fuels for industrial equipment, aiming to establish a world-class research program that leverages Argonne's core capabilities in experimental and computational research. The successful candidate will enhance the research portfolio, engage with external sponsors for funding, and foster collaborative partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out a world-class research program for industrial and building decarbonization, training postdoctoral researchers and students as appropriate.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
  • Participate in public outreach activities to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness.
  • Contribute to the development of a strategic research plan for industrial and building decarbonization aligned with multiple DOE Offices.
  • Perform/guide experimental research and set up a state-of-the-art laboratory for testing heat pumps and industrial equipment with low and no-carbon fuels.
  • Perform/guide computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research, developing and improving existing computational tools and transitioning them to industry.
  • Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in decarbonization, proposing innovative research directions to address them.
  • Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions, to secure funding and establish collaborative research initiatives.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field such as mechanical or chemical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in leading or conducting research in industrial and building decarbonization technologies, or related fields.
  • Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary research teams and delivering impactful research outcomes.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and experience presenting research findings at conferences and public forums.
  • Skilled communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
