About the position

KLA is seeking a Senior Research Scientist specializing in electromagnetics, Fourier optics, and imaging systems to join our technology development team in the Broadband Plasma Division. This division is at the forefront of developing optical inspection technology utilized by semiconductor fabs globally. The role is critical as it involves working with advanced optical inspection systems that are essential for detecting yield-critical defects in integrated circuit manufacturing. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in electromagnetics to contribute to the development of next-generation optical inspection platforms, which are vital for the production of modern electronic devices. In this position, you will engage in both experimental and theoretical research, focusing on the challenges posed by the diffraction limit in optical imaging at feature scales of 10-20 nm. You will be expected to apply your deep understanding of semiconductor device fabrication processes to enhance the performance of our optical inspection systems. The role requires a strong aptitude for modeling and simulation in optics, as well as a solid foundation in image and signal processing techniques. You will also be responsible for designing and analyzing experiments to validate concepts and effectively communicating your findings to diverse audiences within the organization. Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance optical inspection technology for semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Conduct experiments and simulations related to electromagnetics and optics.
  • Design and analyze experiments to validate new concepts in optical inspection.
  • Communicate research findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate new technologies into existing systems.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering with specialization in electromagnetism and/or optics.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience with a PhD, 6 years with a Master's, or 8 years with a Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong knowledge of image processing and signal processing techniques.
  • Expertise in Fourier optics of coherent and incoherent imaging systems.
  • Understanding of noise in optical imaging and detection systems.
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulations of complex structures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience performing experiments with optical microscopes.
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic scattering theory and perturbation methods.
  • Proven ability to build high-performance computing (HPC) simulators for complex physical systems.
