About the position

The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Scientist to work in its cryo-EM (cryogenic electron microscopy) and micro-ED (micro electron diffraction) shared instrumentation core facilities. This position is integral to the MRL Central Research Facilities staff, focusing on advanced data analysis and research support in these specialized areas. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of approximately 25 scientists and engineers who maintain major research instruments in the MRL's core facilities for electron microscopy, as well as other shared instrumentation cores for scanning probe microscopy, laser and optical spectroscopy, surface, thermal and physical properties analysis, x-ray scattering, and nanofabrication facilities. The lab is recognized as one of the premier mid-sized user facilities in the nation, serving around 1,000 researchers from various academic institutions, industry, and national laboratories, logging about 90,000 user hours annually. In this role, the Senior Research Scientist will support the cryo-EM and micro-ED core facilities by collaborating with researchers on experimental and data collection strategies, conducting advanced data analysis, and presenting findings. The position also involves preparing and delivering training on micro-ED and cryo-EM data analysis to students and researchers, developing funding proposals for new research initiatives, and participating in instrumentation development to enhance technical capabilities on campus. The candidate will be responsible for formulating documentation improvements, training users on updated safety policies, and engaging in outreach events and educational workshops. Additionally, the role may include classroom teaching and cross-training in other facility techniques to support the team effectively. This is a full-time Academic Professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis, with an expected start date as soon as possible after the closing date. The minimum salary for this position is $85,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications, and the individual hired will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis.
