About the position

The Quantum Sensing and Computing Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Senior Research Scientist specializing in experimental quantum information science, particularly in ion trap quantum computing and sensing. This position is pivotal for leading and participating in various research and development projects aimed at formulating innovative quantum information solutions that address significant national challenges. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and implementing the necessary research and development to bring these solutions to practical fruition. As a part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has a rich history of over 80 years dedicated to solving the nation’s most pressing problems. The laboratory boasts a talented workforce of more than 6,000 individuals. The organization is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible environment, which is essential for executing ORNL's broader mission of accelerating scientific discoveries and translating them into solutions for energy, environment, and security issues. In this role, the Senior Research Scientist will engage in both new and ongoing research in quantum computing, quantum-enhanced sensing, and quantum communication. The position requires the formulation of novel quantum information solutions to national problems, leading multiple R&D projects, and effectively communicating research concepts and results to diverse audiences. The scientist will also work collaboratively with customers to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and create working prototypes for demonstration. Additionally, the role involves writing peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals, as well as representing ORNL in public forums as a subject matter expert. Mentorship and scientific leadership for junior researchers are also key responsibilities, alongside promoting a respectful workplace that aligns with ORNL's core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum computing, quantum-enhanced sensing, and quantum communication.
  • Formulate novel quantum information solutions to problems of national interest and plan and implement the necessary research and development for practical implementation.
  • Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects.
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national and international audiences at all levels.
  • Work with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
  • Represent ORNL as a subject matter expert.
  • Promote the development of junior researchers through scientific leadership and mentorship.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in physics, optics, engineering, or a directly related field.
  • 10 or more years of quantum information work experience at a tertiary institution or in an appropriate industry or government laboratory.

  • Independent research competence as proven by a significant number of national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record.
  • Proven ability to secure research funding from sponsors (federal or within the private sector).
  • Proven ability to lead research teams/efforts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs.
