About the position

The Senior Research Scientist position at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is a pivotal role within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. This department is renowned for its commitment to high-quality professional education and cutting-edge research in biochemistry, molecular genetics, and genomics, with the overarching goal of enhancing our understanding of human disease. The Senior Research Scientist will be tasked with designing, administering, and implementing complex research projects that contribute to the department's mission. This role is critical as it assumes major responsibilities akin to those of an Associate or Full Professor, requiring a high level of expertise and independence in research activities. In this position, the Senior Research Scientist will collect and analyze data in accordance with ethical and technical principles, employing appropriate quantitative, statistical, and qualitative methods for data interpretation. The role demands a broad familiarity with various concepts, practices, and procedures in the field, enabling the scientist to design and conduct experiments in a controlled laboratory environment. The successful candidate will utilize extensive experience and judgment to plan and achieve research goals, while also leading and directing the work of others in the lab. This position is recognized as the highest non-management research role within the department, emphasizing the importance of independent research and leadership in scientific inquiry. Key responsibilities include planning, designing, and conducting independent research across multiple related projects, interpreting assay results, summarizing findings, preparing manuscripts, and presenting research outcomes. Additionally, the Senior Research Scientist will be responsible for preparing grant applications to secure funding for ongoing and future research initiatives. The role may also involve other work-related duties as assigned, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to the department's evolving research needs.

Responsibilities

• Plans, designs, and conducts independent research on multiple related projects.
• Interprets assay results, summarizes findings, prepares manuscripts, and presents findings.
• Prepares grant applications.
• Leads and directs the work of others in the laboratory.
• Collects data in accordance with ethical and technical principles.
• Selects and applies appropriate quantitative, statistical, and/or qualitative methods for analysis and interpretation of data.

Requirements

• Master's degree plus 8 years of experience in a related discipline, or a PhD plus 5 years of experience.
• Two years of research and/or college level teaching experience in a field basic to the work to be performed.
• Experience must include planning, conducting, and reporting as primary responsibilities.
• Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
