About the position

The Senior Residential Real Estate Underwriter is responsible for underwriting both conventional and government loans in accordance with established company, agency, and investor guidelines and procedures. This role requires a thorough understanding of real estate lending regulations and procedures, as well as the ability to coordinate work within the unit and with other departments. The underwriter will ensure compliance with operating policies and procedures related to the real estate loan function, and will play a critical role in the overall risk management and safety of the bank's lending practices. In this position, the underwriter will perform essential duties such as reviewing and analyzing appraisal and inspection reports, determining the necessary information for automated underwriting systems, and computing qualifying ratios to assess creditworthiness. The underwriter will also review loan files for completeness and consistency, using their underwriting authority to make credit decisions for loan applications. Communication is key in this role, as the underwriter will coordinate with loan officers and processors, keeping all parties informed of application statuses and responding to inquiries related to underwriting guidelines. Additionally, the Senior Residential Real Estate Underwriter will provide leadership and on-the-job training to Mortgage Loan Originators, Processors, and Closers, ensuring that all team members adhere to internal policies and regulatory requirements. The role also involves maintaining accurate records, providing reports as needed, and supporting the bank's compliance with laws such as TRID, RESPA, and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. The underwriter must be proactive in responding to audits and addressing any post-closing issues that may arise, all while fostering a workplace environment free from discrimination and harassment.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite conventional and government loans following established guidelines and procedures.
  • Review and analyze appraisal and inspection reports and other documentation.
  • Determine appropriate information to input into automated underwriting systems.
  • Compute qualifying ratios and analyze creditworthiness.
  • Review real estate loan files for completeness and consistency with product terms.
  • Use underwriting authority to disposition loan applications.
  • Coordinate with loan officers and processors during the loan process.
  • Respond to inquiries related to underwriting guidelines and procedures.
  • Make credit decisions for loan approvals or rejections within defined authority limits.
  • Support residential mortgage lending by performing assigned duties.
  • Adhere to internal policies and regulatory requirements for risk management and compliance.
  • Coordinate departmental tasks to ensure efficient processes and completion of essential tasks.
  • Report pertinent information to the immediate supervisor as requested.
  • Respond to audits and post-closing issues for loan files.
  • Communicate with management and staff to integrate goals and activities.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to Mortgage Loan Originators, Processors, and Closers.
  • Maintain appropriate records and provide assigned reports.

Requirements

  • A B.S. or B.A. degree in a related field of study preferred; specialized mortgage lending education and/or training.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience in residential mortgage underwriting, including FHA (DE), VA, and USDA.
  • Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills.
  • Good interpersonal relations and communicative skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of real estate lending regulations and procedures.
  • Visual and auditory skills.
  • Experience with Encompass software.
