About the position

Robotics & Digital Solutions (RAD), part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is seeking a Senior Robotics System Engineer located in Santa Clara, CA. This position is integral to Ethicon, Inc., a global leader in surgical solutions, which has been at the forefront of surgical innovation for over a century. The role offers a unique opportunity for a Robotics Engineer to leverage fundamental modeling and data-driven analysis techniques to address the needs of various stakeholders, including end-users, regulatory bodies, clinical teams, mechanical and electrical engineers, and marketing professionals. The Senior Robotics System Engineer will be responsible for developing and maintaining simulation tools for surgical robotic systems. This includes enabling a model-based analysis framework that supports technical trades and decisions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in the kinematics and dynamics of multi-axis systems, robot manipulators, physics, data analytics, and simulation modeling. The position requires collaboration with design teams to create solutions that align with project requirements while minimizing risks. Additionally, the engineer will lead technical discussions and support system engineering activities across the enterprise, ensuring that all aspects of system performance are thoroughly analyzed and documented. Key responsibilities include developing computational and logical models of system performance, maintaining a product development framework informed by these models, and creating requirements and specifications for system performance based on rigorous analysis. The engineer will also contribute to building a knowledge database for analysis tools and techniques that can be utilized across various projects, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain computational and logical models of key system performance aspects and behaviors.
  • Develop and maintain model-informed product development framework.
  • Work closely with design teams to enable design solutions that align with requirements and minimize risks.
  • Lead technical approach and multi-functional discussions, while supporting system engineering activities across the enterprise.
  • Develop requirements, specifications, and architectures for system/subsystem performance, based on fundamental analysis and data-driven techniques.
  • Help build a knowledge database for analysis tools and techniques that can be used across the project.

Requirements

  • Masters or PhD degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Control, or equivalent areas is required.
  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience developing sophisticated robotics applications for complex electro-mechanical systems with a Master's, or 0+ years with a PhD in the same field.
  • Solid foundation in kinematics, multi-body dynamics, and control of multi-axis mechanical applications is required.
  • Proficiency in high-level analysis language MATLAB is required.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in partitioning, decomposing, and solving sophisticated engineering problems in cross-domain contexts are required.
  • Strong experience in robotics simulation, motion planning, and optimization is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with physics-engine; strong mathematical background; experience working with robotic arms is preferred.
  • Proficiency in high-level analysis languages Matlab/Simulink and Python is preferred.
  • Experience working with cloud-based data platforms is preferred.
