About the position

The Sales Engineer at Ciena will support the sales of Ethernet and IP networking gear to a leading cable operator. This role involves performing technical tasks in consultation with the customer, assisting in the architecture and engineering of a Metro Ethernet deployment, and aiding in the lab certification and integration of new products and software. The position emphasizes building strong customer relationships and providing technical support to drive product introductions and solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for sales of Carrier Ethernet and IP products to a leading cable operator
  • Build strong customer relationships to drive the technical introduction of new products and concepts to the customer
  • Perform technical presentations, demonstrations, and assistance with lab trials including hands-on demonstrations and troubleshooting of lab networking equipment
  • Meet regularly with the customer in southern New Jersey to understand and evaluate their technical needs and requirements and propose network architecture solutions
  • Interface with sales, marketing, and product management to develop and/or propose product enhancements to meet customer requirements
  • Respond to RFIs, RFPs, and other customer requests
  • Develop accurate and timely pre-sales product configuration, pricing, and quotes
  • Maintain and grow your own technical expertise, product knowledge, and sales skills through ongoing training
  • Understand competitor's offerings and explain the technical advantages of Ciena's solutions
  • Manage a small amount of out-of-town travel as required.

Requirements

  • Strong technical knowledge of Carrier Ethernet concepts, networks, products, and applications
  • Knowledge of Ciena's CES product line is an asset
  • Working knowledge of IP networking and understanding of Layer 3 concepts
  • Flexible and able to handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow issues through to resolution
  • Sound judgement in customer interactions
  • Be a team player, collaborative and motivated to succeed
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Technical Degree; BSEE or equivalent
  • 3+ years of telecommunications industry experience, including Metro Ethernet experience
  • Prior Systems / Sales Engineering experience would be an asset.

Nice-to-haves

  • L2 and L3 certifications such as MEF and CCNA; Ciena Optical, Ethernet and Route/Switch certifications
  • Experience with access network technologies, especially PON
  • Experience with optical networking
  • Experience with, or supporting, a cable operator
  • Hands-on experience commissioning and operating Ciena's Ethernet products and operating systems.
