About The Position

The Senior Scientific Specialist in Geology at the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) will engage in research and development of educational materials related to earth sciences, particularly focusing on subsurface energy storage and extraction. This role involves collaboration with technical teams, mentoring students, and contributing to outreach efforts to enhance public understanding of geological sciences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, geography, anthropology, environmental science/policy, or other research-based social sciences with at least 2 years of related experience, or a master's degree with no required experience.
  • Demonstrated experience producing reports of compiled data and research.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Master's degree in geology, geography, anthropology, environmental science/policy, or other research-based social sciences.
  • 2 years of related industry or research experience in petroleum or reservoir geology with a master's degree.
  • Knowledge of geographic information systems (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online).
  • Familiarity with modern scripting/programming languages (e.g., Python, R).
  • Knowledge of innovative methods of information synthesis (e.g., AI / LLMs).

Responsibilities

  • Perform research to assist with the development of earth science educational materials related to subsurface energy storage and extraction projects.
  • Acquire technical information through independent reading, collaboration with subject-matter experts, and interpretation of diagrams.
  • Develop educational materials for various audiences based on technical publications, ensuring clarity and consistency.
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, fostering a culture of innovation and high performance.
  • Research methods for leveraging past reports using AI to enhance discoverability of technical information.
  • Create and maintain production schedules for presentations, reports, and maps.
  • Edit articles for publication, often involving substantial rewriting.
  • Scan and digitize technical diagrams and develop new technical diagrams as needed.
  • Respond to requests for information and provide technical expertise to various stakeholders.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings, conferences, and workshops.
