About the position

The Comprehensive Cancer Center at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a Senior Scientific Writer or Lead Scientific Content Writer to support executive and scientific communications for a diverse portfolio of projects within the Office of the Cancer Center Director/Executive Vice President. This role is pivotal in advancing research and cures for children with cancer, allowing the successful candidate to work closely with internationally recognized investigators, clinicians, and thought leaders in a world-class scientific environment. The position is designed for a talented individual with exceptional skills in written communication, presentation, and critical and strategic thinking, who will play a key role in the success of major initiatives, including the renewal of the Cancer Center's Support Grant (CCSG) from the National Cancer Institute. In this role, the writer will be responsible for developing executive communications and presentations, as well as creating materials to promote scientific events and initiatives, such as the weekly virtual lecture series, The Science of Childhood Cancer, which has attracted over 8,200 attendees globally. The position will report to the Senior Director of Strategy and Special Programs, a PhD-trained scientist with expertise in scientific writing and communications strategy, and will involve collaboration with various departments across the institution, including Strategic Communication and Education Outreach. The Senior Scientific Writer will support communication needs for executive leadership, including reports and presentations for various boards and the scientific community. They will provide expert writing support for the CCSG, develop content for internal and external communications, and collaborate with graphic designers and other teams to create effective communication materials. The role also involves researching, writing, and editing a variety of communication materials, ensuring alignment with quality guidelines and project objectives, and conducting literature reviews to support evidence-based communication practices. The Lead Scientific Content Writer will have additional responsibilities, including mentoring less experienced colleagues and representing the team on projects.

Responsibilities

  • Support communication needs for executive Cancer Center leadership, including reports and presentations for the St. Jude Board of Governors and the Cancer Center External Advisory Board.
  • Provide expert scientific and strategic writing support for the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG), including competitive renewal applications and presentations.
  • Develop content for internal and external communications activities, including communications to Cancer Center membership, website, and social media.
  • Collaborate with the department of Strategic Communications and Education Outreach, visual media and graphic designers, and other teams to develop communications materials.
  • Integrate graphics, data figures, and other visual assets into communications materials with the help of professional graphic designers.
  • Research, write, and edit diverse communication materials such as articles, announcements, social media posts, and infographics.
  • Keep track of project activities and ensure alignment with quality guidelines and project timelines.
  • Work with relevant parties and subject matter experts on content for communications.
  • Review, analyze, and audit existing content to ensure quality and compliance with organizational standards.
  • Conduct literature reviews and analysis to ensure evidence-based communication practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences, or related field required.
  • Master's degree or PhD preferred.
  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences, or related fields for Senior Scientific Writer.
  • Demonstrated experience in a scientific communications role with a strong understanding of scientific terminology and research concepts.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences, or related field for Lead Scientific Content Writer.
  • Significant experience in a scientific communications role or marketing, social media, journalism, and writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in stakeholder management is preferred for both roles.
