About the position

Genentech is seeking a highly motivated Senior AI Scientist to join the Single Cell Genomics Methods and Models group within the BRAID department. This role focuses on developing advanced Machine Learning models to leverage transcriptomics data for target discovery and understanding disease biology. The position involves collaboration with software developers, machine learning experts, and computational biologists to train large models on extensive scRNAseq data collections, ultimately guiding clinical development decisions and driving innovation in drug discovery.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the application of cutting-edge ML models to address bottlenecks in target discovery and drug development.
  • Collaborate closely with different therapeutic areas and cross-functional teams to understand needs and concerns.
  • Provide domain-specific input to the development of foundation models.
  • Scale ML models to large biological datasets, addressing deep learning and engineering challenges.
  • Publish regularly in top-tier ML venues and/or scientific journals, presenting results at scientific venues, conferences, and workshops.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, or a related technical field.
  • Excellent knowledge of deep learning practices and familiarity with modern architectures, demonstrated in past projects or publications.
  • Extensive experience with scRNAseq data and understanding of its opportunities and limitations.
  • Demonstrated strengths in developing new computational tools and models.
  • Strong publication record at top-tier venues.
  • Advanced skills in Python and familiarity with Machine Learning libraries such as Pytorch and Pytorch Lightning.
  • Strong analytical and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Motivated to learn and apply new Machine Learning techniques as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Interest in understanding applications of foundation models in biology, particularly in drug and target discovery and development.
