About the position

The Process Engineer role within the Chemical Development team at GSK involves utilizing technical knowledge and expertise to scale up processes for the manufacture of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The position focuses on developing and deploying advanced processes and technologies to support the pharmaceutical development pipeline, ensuring effective transfer of manufacturing processes to pilot scale while collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design and execute laboratory protocols and experiments for key chemical unit operations.
  • Develop mechanistic process models for key chemical unit operations demonstrating predictive capability.
  • Initiate new research directions and novel strategies to achieve department goals.
  • Proactively identify scale-up risks and provide engineering solutions for small molecule API processes.
  • Work collaboratively on multi-disciplinary development teams to deliver work packages for effective scale-up.
  • Characterize chemical processing equipment across multiple scales and manufacturing sites.
  • Contribute to the technical transfer of processes into a manufacturing setting.
  • Perform complex data management and interpretation, recording results effectively and communicating them in technical reports.
  • Comply with local regulatory and data integrity requirements, including cGMP and GSK policies.
  • Assist in new research directions and novel strategies to achieve project or department goals.

Requirements

  • BS in Chemical Engineering with 3-5 years relevant industry experience, particularly in developing mechanistic models for chemical processes.
  • Experience with engineering software such as Dynochem, Aspen, or gPROMS.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS in Chemical Engineering
  • Specialized knowledge in reaction engineering, separation technologies, fluid dynamics, scale-up of pharmaceutical unit operations, and/or systems modeling.
  • Experience in leading or contributing to multi-disciplinary pharmaceutical product development teams.
  • Broad knowledge of process development in support of manufacturing development.
  • Experience in Technical Transfer.
  • Working knowledge of Quality by Design (QbD) principles and/or a risk-based approach to pharmaceutical development.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems.
  • Working knowledge of organic chemistry.
