About the position

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer in the PayPal Command Center Production Operations team, you will play a crucial role in troubleshooting complex production site issues while collaborating with various teams, including Product Development and Technical Support. This position offers an opportunity to build automation, find long-term solutions to persistent problems, and improve the reliability of our systems. The Production Operations team is part of the PayPal Command Center, where Site Reliability Engineers are the core of the response team for critical incidents affecting PayPal's merchants and customers. You will actively contribute to PayPal's monitoring and automation platforms, leveraging your system knowledge and software engineering skills to quickly identify and remediate production-impacting incidents. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining the availability of the PayPal production site and enhancing its reliability. In your day-to-day activities, you will be the first responder to any system and application events detected in the PayPal Command Center. You will develop and enhance production monitoring and management capabilities, triage and remediate incidents, handle escalations from partners, and maintain accurate documentation of site incidents. Additionally, you will work with various stakeholders to identify recurring issues and develop long-term solutions, ensuring that PayPal's services remain reliable and efficient.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot complex production site issues affecting merchants and customers.
  • Build automation involving monitoring and site management.
  • Identify and remediate production impacting incidents.
  • Develop and enhance production monitoring and management capabilities.
  • Handle escalations from PayPal partners regarding critical issues.
  • Work with Technical Duty Officer and other support teams to resolve incidents.
  • Identify recurring system and application issues and collaborate with various teams to resolve them.
  • Send external communications regarding outages to merchants, partners, and customers.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of site incidents, including impact details and resolution steps.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for operations interacting with the live site.

Requirements

  • Experience in Operational/Application support.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in Linux System Administration.
  • Experience with GitOps and OaC preferred; knowledge of Terraform, Jenkins, and Artifactory is a strong plus.
  • Experience with managing incidents.
  • Knowledge of load balancing principles (F5 & Avi).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Shell & Python).
  • Experience in containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge in systems and multi-tier application and network troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with database concepts (SQL or NoSQL).
  • Knowledge of CORE Java concepts and JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure/cloud technologies (GCP, AWS, Azure) preferred.
  • Familiarity with configuration management and automation (e.g., Puppet, Ansible).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
