About the position

GEICO's Infrastructure and Capacity Planning is seeking an experienced Senior Manager to build and manage a new team of engineers who are passionate about creating engineering solutions, including tools, frameworks, and automation for Cloud Infrastructure. This newly established organization is focused on enabling optimal cloud capacity for all application teams to run enterprise-wide products. The workloads are distributed between On-prem, Azure, and AWS, providing exciting opportunities to tackle complex problems in a Hybrid-cloud model. As a Senior Manager, you will have the chance to make a significant impact on our customers' experience and contribute to GEICO's mission of technology transformation. In this role, you will be an engineering leader responsible for guiding members of the engineering staff across the organization to ensure a seamless experience for our customers, providing the right capacity at the right time. Our team thrives in delivering high-quality technology products and services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities can shift rapidly. The ideal candidate will possess broad and deep technical knowledge and experience to enhance planning, availability, design, and evolution of cloud/infrastructure architecture, leveraging engineering solutions to address operational challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with application teams to understand and translate their application needs to infrastructure needs.
  • Influence and build vision with application owners to ship quality products at a faster pace.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of team strategy and execution.
  • Develop and motivate teams to solve complex problems and advocate for open-source technologies and solutions.
  • Be technically hands-on in coding and building highly available systems.
  • Build and mentor a new team of software engineers.
  • Drive the team towards building solutions aligned with long-term goals while efficiently addressing high-priority tech debts.
  • Serve as a thought leader in Infrastructure & Capacity Planning, Supply Chain, Operational excellence, and DevOps Principles.
  • Share best practices and improve processes within and across teams.

Requirements

  • Hands-on Software engineering manager with a strong understanding of Cloud services and DevOps principles.
  • Fluency with at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java, or Go; experience with open-source software is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience managing infrastructure components through Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and Ansible.
  • Strong technical acumen in Cloud Architecture, Performance Benchmarking, Capacity planning, and Reliability tools.
  • Expertise in Container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), container runtimes, and OS optimization.
  • Experience with Observability platforms, application monitoring tools, and performance analysis techniques.
  • Experience managing and growing technical leaders and teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of data structures and algorithms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a large-scale, mission-critical environment.
  • Experience with public cloud services such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
