About the position

The Senior Finance Specialist plays a crucial role in the financial operations of the organization, performing a variety of general accounting duties that are essential for maintaining accurate financial records. This position involves updating and maintaining financial records, reconciling general ledger accounts, and managing accounting databases. The Senior Finance Specialist is responsible for the preparation and recording of journal entries into the accounting system, as well as providing administrative support to the finance team. This includes running reports for management and recording a wide range of financial transactions to ensure the integrity of the financial data. In this role, the Senior Finance Specialist will provide administrative and bookkeeping assistance for the preparation of financial reports, confirming the accuracy of accounting information. Key responsibilities include the preparation of accounting and financial transactions using various financial systems and tools, receiving and recording vouchers, entries, remittances, and other transactions. The specialist will check for accuracy in reports, account balances, and postings, ensuring that all data is entered accurately in support of the accounting function. Additionally, the role requires providing information used to prepare regular and ad hoc management reports and spreadsheets, reconciling and reporting any discrepancies found in the accounting records, and maintaining records and documentation of financial processes. The Senior Finance Specialist will also be expected to manage small teams and coordinate with other departments within the Financial Services Group. This includes the preparation of detective reports that highlight financial variances, which are critical for identifying areas of concern and ensuring financial compliance. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying causes for errors and potential risk areas, as well as the ability to manage multiple duties and responsibilities effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general accounting duties of a clerical nature.

  • Accurately enter key data in systems to support the accounting function.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; preferred post high school education achievement.
  • Five (5) + years of experience in financial and accounting roles.
  • Knowledge of computer tools, primarily Microsoft applications.
  • Understanding of financial reporting systems, general ledger, and accounting systems.
  • Ability to identify and analyze errors and mis-posting through data mining tools.
  • Good communication skills and ability to interact with team members and management.
  • Proactive skills to identify causes for errors and potential risk areas.
  • Ability to manage multiple duties, responsibilities, and staff members.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of ABS Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems.
