About the position

The Senior Specification Writer at CDM Smith is responsible for writing, editing, and coordinating project technical specifications related to engineering and architecture. This role involves using various specification platforms and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. The position requires collaboration with project managers and other stakeholders to maintain and update specifications, as well as mentoring junior staff in specification writing proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Write, edit, and coordinate project technical specifications using multiple specification platforms.
  • Coordinate review of Division 00/01 with project managers and firm's counsel.
  • Develop, maintain, and update project specifications table of contents (TOC).
  • Create and maintain specification section development responsibility worksheets.
  • Incorporate federal, state, and local requirements into specifications.
  • Lead the quality checking process for project technical specifications.
  • Provide regular updates to project managers and design engineers.
  • Review project drawings for specification continuity.
  • Update and maintain the master specifications library in collaboration with other specification writers and discipline leaders.
  • Participate in writing new master specifications as needed.
  • Upload specifications sections into specifications systems like ProjectWise.
  • Compile and maintain a complete project manual for duplication and reporting.
  • Train and mentor staff in developing specification writing proficiency.
  • Coordinate the work of intermediate and entry-level specification writers on assigned projects.
  • Assist with project contract language and proposals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and Professional Engineer (PE), Registered Architect (RA), or related technical registration/license OR Bachelor's degree and CCS Certification.
  • 7 years of related experience, with equivalent additional directly related experience considered in lieu of a degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with design, project management, and construction administration.
  • Experience writing and editing engineering technical specifications for public, government, and private sector projects.
  • Experience with HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical specifications.
  • Familiarity with CSI format requirements for technical specifications and EJCDC front end documents.
  • Membership in CSI with CDT or CCS certification desirable.
