About the position

The Senior SQL Server Database Administrator is a full performance technologist responsible for providing operational database management services to the City of Philadelphia. This role involves implementing standards for data management and SQL Server/PostgreSQL practices, ensuring the performance and security of mission-critical databases, and supporting the overall IT infrastructure of the city.

Responsibilities

  • Provides hands-on operational support to the City's mission critical databases.
  • Performs general Database Administration tasks including DBMS software installation, object management, startup and stoppage, patching, and upgrades.
  • Identifies performance issues and carries out performance tuning.
  • Participates in database software products evaluation.
  • Monitors database management systems (DBMS) and data reporting platforms across the Solution Deployment Life Cycle (Development, Test, Production).
  • Implements, enforces, and monitors data security and compliance standards (NIST, HIPAA, CIJS, IRS PUB 1075, etc.).
  • Participates in the collection of database operations metrics for reports and capacity planning.
  • Executes established database operation policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Performs reliable backup and restore operations that meet operational level requirements.
  • Provisions DBMS user access in accordance with established data management procedures and policies.
  • Tracks the provisioning process and reports to the team.
  • Participates in the database operation cost accounting and budgeting process.
  • Regularly communicates with customers and addresses or escalates any identified dissatisfaction.
  • Shares technical knowledge with the team and tutors junior team members.
  • Participates in the review and approval of software solution architectures.
  • Writes database and reporting systems operations automation scripts.
  • Performs various data management operations and configurations including Data ETL, data replication, and data profiling.
  • Creates and maintains documentation on architecture, standards, and processes.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree program at an accredited college or university which has included a course in computer science, mathematics, business or equivalent.
  • 5 years of information technology experience including extensive database administration in SQL Server and PostgreSQL.

Nice-to-haves

  • Database Administration Certification is a plus.
  • Operational knowledge of PostgreSQL, including Geometry data types.
  • Familiarity with SQL Server Reporting Service (SSRS/PBIRS): Administration and Report Design.
  • Operational knowledge of another database management system used by the City (Oracle, Sybase, ADABAS, etc.) is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud and open source database offerings (MySQL, Aurora, Dynamo, MongoDB, MariaDB, Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS, etc.).
  • Knowledge of ITSM/ITIL concepts and processes (Incident Management, Change Management, Problem Management, Release Management, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Data Warehousing Concepts is a plus.
