About the position

The Senior SQL Database Administrator at Xerox is responsible for managing and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server databases to ensure high availability and performance. This role involves owning, tracking, and resolving database-related incidents and requests, ensuring that all tasks are completed within established service level agreements (SLAs). The administrator will review service-related reports daily, including database backups and maintenance logs, to identify and resolve any service-related issues promptly. Additionally, the position requires responding to database alerts and escalations, collaborating with application developers and systems engineers to devise strategic solutions for recurring problems. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting and resolving database problems, performance tuning and optimization using native monitoring tools, and error identification and remediation. The administrator will assist with backups, restores, replication, and recovery models, as well as develop SQL jobs for data exports, purges, and error monitoring. Implementing high availability and disaster recovery options for MS SQL Server, including database clustering and log shipping, is also a critical aspect of this role. Furthermore, the position involves operational automation through scripting and effective index management. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in IT operations, particularly with Microsoft SQL Server, and will be expected to actively participate in application deployment, ensuring smooth transitions to testing and production environments. This role is essential in maintaining the integrity and performance of database systems within the organization, contributing to the overall efficiency of business operations.

Responsibilities

  • Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration
  • Troubleshooting and resolving database problems
  • Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools
  • Error identification, analysis and remediation
  • Assistance with backups, restores, replication and recovery models
  • SQL reporting and SSIS packages
  • Developing SQL Jobs for data exports, data purges, error monitoring and investigate/resolve job failures
  • Performing High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for MS SQL Server, including database clustering and log shipping
  • Implementing operational automation using scripts
  • Use of indexes, index management, and statistics

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Technology or related field preferred
  • 7+ years IT operations with strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices
  • 7+ years Microsoft SQL Server experience
  • An understanding of, and experience with, server-client computing and relational database environments
  • Experience with data management and data processing techniques
  • Knowledge of reporting and query tools and practices
  • Application development experience in one or more of the following technologies: MS Commerce Server, Content Management Systems, .NET, AJAX and jQuery
  • Be an active member of the application deployment team and periodically responsible for deploying code to Test, UAT, or production
  • Experience working in an enterprise level eCommerce environment
  • Involvement with the MS SQL Server Community; active in forums or newsgroups
