About the position

The Senior SQL Developer at Estes Forwarding Worldwide (EFW) plays a crucial role in the production support of all software and integrations developed by the Software Engineering teams. This includes a variety of integration types such as EDI, XML, and flat file integrations, as well as managed file transfers, database integrations, web applications, and APIs. The position requires a strong focus on creating new integrations or modifying existing ones, adhering to the engineering teams' coding standards and best practices. Key responsibilities include database design and development, where the Senior SQL Developer will design, develop, and maintain relational databases and data warehouses. This involves creating efficient database schemas, tables, indexes, and constraints to support business applications, as well as implementing database objects like stored procedures, triggers, and functions to automate processes and enforce business rules. The role also emphasizes SQL query optimization, requiring the developer to performance tune existing SQL objects and write complex SQL queries to handle large volumes of data effectively. In addition to database management, the Senior SQL Developer will be responsible for data integration and ETL processes, ensuring data quality, consistency, and accuracy. Documentation of database designs and adherence to best practices in database development are also critical components of the role. The developer will proactively monitor SQL Agent Jobs for failures and respond to support requests, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration processes. Participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours support is also expected, along with compliance with company security procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Production support of all software and integrations developed by the Software Engineering teams.
  • Design, develop, and maintain relational databases and data warehouses.
  • Create efficient database schemas, tables, indexes, and constraints to support business applications.
  • Implement database objects such as stored procedures, triggers, and functions to automate processes and enforce business rules.
  • Participate in code reviews and commit changes to source control (GitHub).
  • Performance tune existing SQL objects using all available metrics and tools.
  • Write and optimize complex SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and analyze large volumes of data.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in SQL Queries and database operations.
  • Tune database configurations and query execution plans for optimal performance.
  • Design and implement data integration solutions to extract, transform, and load data from various sources into the database.
  • Develop ETL processes to ensure data quality, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Document database designs, schemas, and processes to ensure knowledge transfer and maintain system documentation.
  • Proactively monitor SQL Agent Jobs for failures using all available applications and tools.
  • Respond to support requests using Jira Service Management and Jira Cloud.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and project managers to clarify requirements on support requests.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration processes.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours, weekend, and holiday support.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and 3-5 years of experience.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL programming, including complex query writing, optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with relational database management operations for Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of data modeling techniques and database design principles.
  • Experience with ETL tools and processes.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex business and/or technical documents.
  • Ability to write comprehensive reports and detailed business correspondence.
