About the position

This role is for a Senior SQL Server Database Administrator and Engineer within the Information Systems department at SMBC Group. The primary responsibilities include maintaining and monitoring the SQL Server database environment, which encompasses both on-premises and cloud-based systems. The candidate will be involved in database installation, backup and restore processes, database replication, development, and performance tuning. Additionally, user support and security hardening, including the deployment and maintenance of CIS benchmarks, are critical components of this position. The DBA will collaborate closely with infrastructure teams, front office developers, project managers, and business users to ensure seamless operations. The position is based in either Jersey City, NJ, or White Plains, NY, and requires working in a fast-paced environment that supports the trading business across Front, Middle, and Back office functions. A strong understanding of SQL Server on virtual machines, Azure SQL, database management, engineering, and automation is essential. Familiarity with SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS technologies is also advantageous. The role demands a proactive approach to system administration tasks, including the implementation of monitoring tools and the execution of periodic technology recovery tests. The candidate will also be responsible for maintaining documentation and ensuring effective communication with all relevant teams. The role may require late-night and weekend work for installations, patching, upgrades, and maintenance, and adherence to change control processes is mandatory. The candidate will be expected to provide on-call support and contribute to maintaining a high-availability environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support SQL Server 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022 platforms
  • Support and usage of SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS technologies
  • Support SQL Server Always-On configurations
  • Provide system administration, troubleshooting, monitoring, and database installation
  • Manage database backup and restore processes
  • Set up and maintain database replication
  • Conduct database development and performance tuning
  • Provide user support and security hardening, including CIS deployment
  • Research and recommend innovative solutions for system administration tasks
  • Implement monitoring tools and proactively address potential issues
  • Troubleshoot and resolve incidents to maintain high availability
  • Conduct periodic Technology Recovery tests and participate in On-Call Support rotation
  • Collaborate with Cybersecurity and audit teams to meet security requirements
  • Follow change control processes and maintain documentation
  • Maintain effective communication with Infrastructure and Application teams and management
  • Work onsite in a hybrid schedule.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience as a SQL Server DBA Engineer
  • Experience with SQL Server versions 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022
  • Experience with installation, configuration, and maintenance of SQL Servers on Windows VMs
  • Experience with Always-On, SSRS, SSIS, and SSAS technologies
  • Experience with high availability and disaster recovery processes
  • Understanding of change control, upgrade, and release deployment activities
  • Knowledge of database security, access control, monitoring, and auditing
  • Experience with database authentication via Active Directory or Azure AD
  • Experience with monitoring, tuning, and analyzing database performance

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Azure SQL databases and SQL VMs
