About the position

The Senior Staff Accountant position is a critical role within the insurance operations team, focusing on the accurate and timely processing of financial data. This position involves posting and processing journal entries related to various insurance operations activities, ensuring that all financial transactions are recorded accurately in the general ledger. The Senior Staff Accountant will be responsible for preparing monthly general ledger account reconciliations, which are essential for maintaining the integrity of financial reporting. In addition to regular accounting duties, the Senior Staff Accountant will assist with the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring that all financial statements are prepared in accordance with regulatory requirements. A significant aspect of this role includes preparing NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) and regulatory STAT filings, which encompass both quarterly and annual statements. The accountant will also handle various state and regulatory data calls, providing necessary information to comply with state regulations. The role supports both internal and external audit processes, requiring collaboration with auditors and the preparation of financial reports for review by the executive team, the Office of Insurance Regulation, auditors, banking entities, and reinsurers. The Senior Staff Accountant is expected to continuously drive process improvements within the team and support cross-functional initiatives, leveraging their strong understanding of insurance industry processes and statutory financial reporting. Attention to detail is paramount, as the role involves quantitative analysis and proficiency in Excel, particularly with pivot tables and macros, to analyze data effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Post and process journal entries for insurance operations activity
  • Preparation of monthly general ledger account reconciliations
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly and year end close
  • Prepare NAIC / Regulatory STAT filings, which include quarterly and annual statements
  • Handle various state and/or Regulatory Data Calls
  • Support the internal and external audit process

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or other related field from a four-year institution
  • 4 to 7 years in a staff accounting role in the property and casualty insurance industry
  • Familiarity with both GAAP and statutory accounting principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Outlook, Word
  • Experience with General Ledger or Accounts Payable systems
  • Exceptional organization skills and ability to complete all administrative tasks in assigned times
