About the position
The Senior Staff Attorney or Staff Attorney role is an in-house position that will handle a designated caseload of Workers' Compensation cases appearances before the California Workers' Compensation Boards in Santa Rosa, San Francisco and Oakland. Our selected candidate will be part of a collaborative learning environment with onsite appearances in partnership with our Attorney Staff. Responsibilities
- Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive and develop well-reasoned legal research.
- Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.
- Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies with autonomy.
- Partner with our Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insured.
- Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues.
- Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion.
- Facilitate prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.
- Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, judicial/administrative hearings, arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions.
- Research, draft, file and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts on behalf of clients.
- Participate in Team Huddles.
- Provide in-house training to junior associates and/or claims partners.
- Participate in claims file reviews.
- Attend continuing legal education seminars in order to maintain high level of professional expertise.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers' Compensation cases for Staff Attorney.
- Minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers' Compensation cases for Sr Staff Attorney.
- JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of California.
- Trial experience is preferred.
- Positive minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Lexis Nexis experience is a plus!
- Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.
