About the position

The Senior Staff Engineer, Mechanical at Marotta Controls, Inc. is responsible for the design, development, testing, qualification, and production support of precision control components and systems, particularly in the aerospace and defense sectors. This role involves collaborating with a multi-disciplined team to meet customer requirements and schedules while ensuring cost-effectiveness and manufacturability of designs. The position also includes mentoring junior engineers and interfacing with customers to address product changes and technical requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design Electromechanical Actuators from a blank sheet of paper to meet customer requirements.
  • Design spur, bevel, worm, and planetary gears.
  • Design and analyze kinematic mechanisms such as Slider Crank, Scotch Yoke, and 4-Bar.
  • Size and select Ball Screws to meet system performance requirements.
  • Size and select Bearings (Radial, Thrust, Angular contact) to meet loads and life necessary for system performance.
  • Create and modify drawings with appropriate GD&T and verify Bill of Material accuracy.
  • Design cost-effective, easily manufacturable hardware considering tolerance stack-ups, ease of assembly, and materials of construction.
  • Dispose of non-conforming hardware and correct production/vendor issues.
  • Perform failure investigations of designs.
  • Create, review, and approve processes for assembly, test, and related activities.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to determine necessary product changes.
  • Write technical documents for internal and external customers.
  • Participate in design reviews (internal and external).
  • Support new business pursuits addressing program technical requirements and associated schedule and costs.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8+ years' experience in mechanical engineering design, preferably in aerospace or defense.
  • Experience designing and testing to Mil-Std-810 Environments (Humidity, Salt Fog, Vibration, Shock, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience solving technical problems using a methodical scientific approach.
  • Experience in 3D modeling of mechanical components and assemblies, preferably using CREO.
  • Experience with Electromechanical Actuation Servo Systems.
  • Experience with Brushless DC motor design and operation.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis for Structural, Thermal, and Dynamic Analysis.
  • Organizational and task management skills to handle concurrent issues.
  • Leadership skills to interface with various teams and disciplines.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, casting, milling, turning, grinding, drilling, etc.
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
