About the position

The Senior Manager for the Core Insurance Platform (CIP) organization at GEICO will lead the development and management of a new Policy Platform Engineering team. This role focuses on creating a next-generation Insurtech platform for policy management and foundational capabilities across various GEICO business lines. The Senior Manager will collaborate with technical and business teams to establish a roadmap for enhancing GEICO's technology capabilities and ensure timely delivery of projects.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage a team to drive the development of a next-generation Insurtech platform.
  • Work with the Director to address project dependencies and deliver projects on time.
  • Identify and raise project risks, presenting detailed solutions or alternatives.
  • Understand the impact of requirements and design choices on systems across multiple areas.
  • Report on team progress for projects and key metrics, suggesting improvements for product delivery.
  • Initiate and support performance evaluations of team members.
  • Cultivate a motivating culture for all levels of performers.
  • Build and maintain relationships with team members to foster trust.
  • Influence and coach team members to be receptive to feedback and growth.
  • Identify skill gaps that may risk future deliverables and create remediation plans.
  • Conduct difficult conversations regarding development and performance.
  • Craft and deliver strategic arguments to drive process improvements and enhance customer experience.
  • Develop and manage the team budget, reporting on results regularly.
  • Contribute significantly to the team planning process.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of modern cloud-based distributed systems design patterns.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing technologies (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS) and providers (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Proven ability to learn technical concepts and adapt to new technologies quickly.
  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts.
  • Experience with microservice-based architectures and Event Driven Architectures.
  • Fluency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Java, Go) and experience with open-source software.
  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments.
  • Ability to construct and interpret metrics to drive decision making.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and/or regulatory compliance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a large-scale, mission-critical environment.
  • Hands-on experience supervising personnel in a fast-paced technical environment.
