About the position

As a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer in the Search and Discovery Product Engineering (SDPE) ML group, you will be at the forefront of our advanced machine learning initiatives. This team is pivotal in enhancing Coupang's product search and discovery experience, utilizing cutting-edge algorithms to improve query understanding, recommendation systems, and overall search quality. Your work will directly impact our top-line metrics, ensuring that we continue to deliver exceptional experiences to our customers. In this role, you will be responsible for identifying and addressing major defects in the search experience, proposing innovative solutions that leverage state-of-the-art technologies such as machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and large language models (LLMs). You will drive end-to-end ML methods that are complex and ambiguous, build and optimize machine learning models, and deploy them into production. Additionally, you will establish efficient processes for data analysis and model validation, run A/B experiments to gather insights, and present your findings to leadership. As a senior member of the team, you will also mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to elevate the overall ML talent within the company. Your expertise in recommendation platforms, deep learning, and natural language processing will be crucial as you navigate challenges and drive impactful projects that align with Coupang's ambitious goals.

Responsibilities

• Root causes the major defects that are present in Coupang searchers' experience.
• Propose solutions which address these defects and leverage the state-of-the-art technologies, including ML, DL and LLM.
• Drive end-to-end ML methods that have a high degree of ambiguity, scale and complexity.
• Build machine learning models, perform proof-of-concept, experiment, optimize and deploy your models into production.
• Establish scalable, efficient, automated processes for data analysis, machine-learning model development, model validation and serving.
• Run A/B experiments, gather data, and perform statistical analysis to develop insights that drive product requirements.
• Present results and explain methods to the leadership.
• Mentor junior engineers on the team and partner teams and help to uplevel ML talent across the company.
• Be a thought leader and able to gain consensus in the organization when needed.

Requirements

• 8+ years working experience in the engineering teams that build large-scale ML-driven user-facing products.
• Experience with state of the art ML modeling techniques and approaches like transformers, self supervised pre-training, generative modeling, LLMs, etc.
• Hands-on experience training and applying models at scale using deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or Tensorflow.
• Proficient coding skills in Java, C++ or Python.
• Masters or PhD in Comp Sci or related fields.
