About the position

GEICO is seeking a Senior Manager for Commercial Insurance Engineering to lead a team focused on enhancing data engineering capabilities. This role involves managing engineering projects, mentoring staff, and collaborating with various teams to ensure effective data management and application integration. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in data engineering and open-source technologies, aiming to drive innovation and efficiency within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects and processes to keep the team organized and efficient.
  • Hire, retain, mentor, and manage engineering staff to ensure they have the necessary skills.
  • Perform engineering design evaluations to ensure projects are within resource, budget, and scheduling constraints.
  • Set, manage, and report KPIs to measure progress and facilitate data-driven decision making.
  • Manage day-to-day activities of the engineering teams and project managers overseeing execution of software development projects.
  • Seek ways to simplify and standardize designs, operations, and deployment plans.
  • Be responsible for production operations support and ensuring availability, stability, and performance of production applications.
  • Establish and foster great relationships with tech teams and business partners.

Requirements

  • Proven management experience leading teams of 6+ engineers.
  • Strong understanding of data transfer, data architecture, and its application in commercial insurance.
  • Hands-on experience with modern open data stack technologies such as Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Spark, Flink, DBT, Python, Kafka, Airflow, NiFi.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud computing technologies and concepts (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).
  • Fluency with at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java, or Go.
  • Proven ability to learn technical concepts and adapt to new technologies quickly.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Proficiency in project management tools such as GitHub and Azure DevOps.
  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts.
  • Fluency with SQL, PowerBI, and Snowflake.
  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and build and release practices in commercial insurance.
