About the position

GEICO is seeking a Senior Manager for Commercial Insurance Engineering to lead a team focused on enhancing data engineering capabilities. This role involves managing engineering projects, mentoring staff, and collaborating with various teams to optimize data pipelines and support the commercial insurance business. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in data engineering and open-source technologies, along with proven management experience.

Responsibilities

• Manage projects and processes to keep the team organized and efficient.
• Hire, retain, mentor, and manage engineering staff to ensure skill development.
• Perform engineering design evaluations to ensure projects meet resource, budget, and scheduling constraints.
• Set, manage, and report KPIs to measure progress and facilitate data-driven decision making.
• Oversee day-to-day activities of engineering teams and project managers to ensure project delivery.
• Simplify and standardize designs, operations, and deployment plans to reduce complexity.
• Ensure availability, stability, and performance of production applications.
• Build strong relationships with tech teams and business partners.

Requirements

• Proven management experience leading teams of 6+ engineers.
• Strong understanding of data transfer and data architecture in commercial insurance.
• Hands-on experience with modern open data stack technologies (e.g., Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Spark).
• Strong knowledge of cloud computing technologies (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).
• Fluency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Java, Go).
• Proven ability to learn technical concepts and adapt to new technologies quickly.
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Proficiency in project management tools (GitHub, Azure DevOps).
• Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts.
• Fluency with SQL, PowerBI, Snowflake.
• Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
