About the position

The Senior Structural Design Engineer is a licensed professional responsible for overseeing the production of design documents related to structural engineering projects. This role involves reviewing design documents, shop drawings, and computations submitted by contractors to ensure compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements. The engineer will also coordinate with project managers and design consultants to resolve issues, manage documentation, and provide technical leadership within the structural engineering section.

Responsibilities

  • Review design documents for structural requirements and compliance with WMATA and Federal codes.
  • Perform constructability reviews and engage with project managers to resolve issues.
  • Coordinate and review contractor submitted shop and working drawings and design calculations.
  • Assign and monitor document reviews completed by other members of the structural engineering section.
  • Serve as a technical lead and subject matter expert for interdisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Develop technical basis for change orders and prepare documentation for post-bid design changes.
  • Prepare or review feasibility studies and cost estimates related to structural systems.
  • Recommend training and seminars for engineering staff and stay updated on industry developments.
  • Conduct periodic visits to active construction sites for oversight and advice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Seven years of experience in design of industrial buildings and underground structures
  • Experience in design of post-tensioned, precast and pre-stressed structures
  • Registered Professional Engineer in VA, MD or DC
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Roadway Worker Protection Certification, Level 2 to be attained within 6 months of entry

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering is preferred
