About the position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time Senior Structural Engineer - Hydropower and Utility Services for our Salt Lake City, UT office. The following locations will also be considered: Seattle, WA or Portland, OR. Be involved in projects within our Clean Energy Business Line and be a part of a rapidly expanding group that provides trusted advisor and engineer of record services to Hydropower and Utility clients throughout the United States. This position directly advances our clients' responses to Climate Change by supporting the owners and operators of clean hydropower and the integration of other renewable energy resources nationwide. This role provides Structural Engineering expertise, including high-level technical assistance and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of hydropower infrastructure and related energy projects. Tasks include the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of energy facilities, specifically hydropower, as well as solar, wind, or biomass power plants; transmission and distribution facilities. Substantiates reports and documentation to advise on material, installations, design, component, and construction specifications. This is a fantastic chance to work with a dynamic team within the premier engineering firm that is leading the field in hydropower, pumped storage, and the integration of solar and batteries, and wind generation throughout the United States. Your days will be a mix of working from home or the office, and field trips to the nation's majestic mountains and rivers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering duties from conceptual stages of projects through construction.
  • Provide design activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all WSP's policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
  • Conduct structural analysis and foundation design for pump houses, power houses, substations, and electrical infrastructure.
  • Deliver accurate and thorough designs that meet industry standards and specifications and ensure good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
  • Review internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice, and constructability.
  • Procure materials, estimate project costs, and conduct quality control reviews.
  • Resolve site queries, attend site meetings, and perform site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
  • Maintain complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements, and return data information.
  • Make and maintain appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinate design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.
  • Maintain good working relationships with internal groups that support projects, as well as with material suppliers, contractors, and others that affect the quality, schedule, and cost of projects.
  • Work with drafting resources to prepare drawings and specifications for various deliverables.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients, material vendors, sub-contractors, etc.
  • Travel for project site visits and field reviews.

Requirements

  • Employment authorization to work in the United States immediately.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • 5 years of relevant post-education experience in hydropower engineering and design experience.
  • Knowledge of substation codes and standards such as ASCE 113, ASCE 74, ASCE 7, OSHA, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Knowledge of building and design codes IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI-318.
  • Proficiency with Structural analysis software - STAAD.Pro, STAAD Foundations, RISA, RISA Foundations or similar software package.
  • Proficiency with Structural steel design - frames, columns, beams, base plates per AISC.
  • Proficiency with steel connection design software - RAM Connections, Tekla, Idea Statica.
  • Proficiency with Hilti Profis, Dewalt Design Assist or other anchor bolt design software.
  • Proficiency with concrete foundation design - slab on grade, shallow foundations, precast concrete foundations, retaining walls, fence foundations.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Civil3D, AutoCAD, MathCAD, PDF authoring software - Bluebeam or similar.
  • Efficient communications and ability to work with team members not located in the same office through MS Teams, email, or telephone calls.
  • Candidate must undergo pre-employment drug screening and a criminal background investigation.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Engineer license or the ability to acquire within one year (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, California, Nevada, or Montana preferred).
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
