About the position

The Senior Structural Engineer plays a key role in the successful execution of projects at KFI Engineers. Reporting to the Structural Engineering Manager, this individual will provide technical and engineering excellence, ensuring successful delivery of work to our customers. The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction by clearly communicating and managing expectations, both externally and internally. This role requires a proactive approach, clear communication with all stakeholders, and the ability to foster a highly collaborative working environment. Additionally, the successful candidate will actively support the business development process by writing proposals and meeting with prospective and current customers. In this position, the Senior Structural Engineer will oversee the production of construction documents, including drawings and specifications, ensuring the application of sound structural engineering principles. They will effectively execute projects by developing estimates for assigned scopes of work, ensuring adherence to project budgets, and creating project plans and schedules for the execution of work. Coordination with both internal and external stakeholders is essential, providing technical support and work direction as needed. The role also requires an understanding of Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering construction practices, and the ability to serve as project manager or discipline lead for complete projects. The Senior Structural Engineer will provide work direction to other team members, including subcontractors, and offer technical and engineering support to other departments. Mentorship of younger, less experienced team members is also a key responsibility, providing guidance and teaching to foster their development.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the production of construction documents including drawings and specifications, ensuring the application of sound structural engineering principles.
  • Effectively execute projects by developing estimates for assigned scope of work and ensuring adherence to project budgets.
  • Create project plans and schedules for the execution of work.
  • Coordinate work with both internal and external stakeholders, providing technical support and work direction as needed.
  • Serve as project manager or discipline lead for complete projects.
  • Support the business development process through input to proposals and meetings with prospective customers.
  • Provide work direction to other team members, including subcontractors, as assigned.
  • Provide technical and engineering support to other departments/disciplines.
  • Mentor younger, less experienced team members, providing guidance and teaching.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structural design is required.
  • Minimum of 7 - 10 years of structural design experience across a variety of industries and processes.
  • Experience using structural analysis software (RISA or similar).
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Effective meeting management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Adaptable and agile, responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • Ability to establish rapport and credibility with customers and other stakeholders.
  • Professional Engineering registration in Minnesota is highly desired; P.E. registration in other states is desirable but not required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in structural engineering is viewed favorably but not required.
