About the position

SmithGroup is an award-winning, integrated design firm that blends research, data, and technology with innovation and a creative spirit to deliver resilient, inclusive spaces that solve our clients' greatest challenges. Our teams create exceptional design solutions for healthcare, science and technology, workplace, mixed use, higher education, cultural, waterfront, parks and open spaces, and urban environments. We are looking for passionate problem solvers who want to elevate design, push boundaries and move us closer to a carbon-free future. Care to join us? The Detroit office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our team in the DC office. In this role, you will provide leadership of the structural engineering team on large and complex projects. You will perform structural analysis, design, and documentation of buildings, site structures, architectural features, and complex projects involving interdisciplinary project teams. Experience with waterfront and marine structures is a plus. You will develop structural designs for structures of various materials that experience multiple loading conditions, which could include extreme loading scenarios such as high wind, heavy snow, high seismic, blast, and progressive collapse. You will create and develop innovative planning and design concepts for projects through collaboration with architectural design leaders. Independently assessing design requirements, determining the level of effort, and providing input on scheduling and fees will be part of your responsibilities. You will manage and monitor structural and budget performance of projects, revise, review, and coordinate construction documents (drawings and specifications) to meet project requirements, and lead quality assurance reviews of projects developed by other teams. Additionally, you will direct and manage the team's construction administration, including site visits as required for observation, answering contractor questions, or representing the owner in reviewing completed work. Preparing presentation drawings, assisting in developing proposal materials, and participating in presentations both internally and externally will also be part of your role. You will supervise, mentor, and train Structural Engineers, CAD/Structural techs, interns, and junior staff.
