About the position

As a Senior Sustainable Operations Manager at JLL, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of real estate through sustainability initiatives. This position is designed for a strategic leader who will work directly with clients' sustainability teams to support their energy and sustainability goals. You will be responsible for ensuring that JLL's sustainability services are delivered effectively and efficiently, acting as an accelerator to enhance stakeholder engagement and drive progress towards sustainability objectives. Your role will involve integrating sustainability practices across various business functions throughout the real estate lifecycle, from site selection to decommissioning, ensuring that sustainability thinking is embedded in all operational aspects. In this remote-based role, with a preference for candidates located in Minneapolis, MN or Portland, OR, you will be expected to develop, implement, and optimize energy and sustainability programs in collaboration with clients. Your responsibilities will include robust communication, driving innovation, and leveraging data to inform strategic decision-making. You will lead the implementation of sustainability initiatives across the client’s real estate portfolio, ensuring that all activities align with client expectations and sustainability objectives. This will involve establishing strong relationships with various stakeholders, including technology, finance, and project teams, to deliver against key performance indicators (KPIs) and elevate the sustainability mission. Your expertise will be crucial in managing the delivery of sustainability programs according to the defined scope of work and schedule. You will also be responsible for tracking and communicating success stories to enhance awareness and engagement with the sustainability program. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to bring innovative ideas and solutions to the table, ensuring that best practices in sustainability performance are consistently applied.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of, and improve upon, a multi-faceted sustainability program.
  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of energy and sustainability initiatives across the client real estate portfolio, including development of relevant tactical and strategic plans and activities.
  • Provide strategic direction and guidance on ways to effectively and efficiently implement sustainability services that meet client expectations, including development of annual and multi-year tactical and programmatic sustainability plans.
  • Meet client sustainability objectives and relevant key performance indicators and ensure processes for monitoring and measuring performance are transparent and reported.
  • Own and develop internal and external stakeholder engagement to ensure integration of energy and sustainability initiatives.
  • Establish strong working relationships with other JLL workstreams (technology, finance, projects, IFM, consultants, and procurement) to deliver against KPI targets, elevate the sustainability mission and objectives, and drive implementation within the business.
  • Effectively manage changes in partnership with stakeholders, which have the potential to impact sustainability objectives.
  • Work in direct collaboration with data analysts to confirm data integrity and accuracy including quality control checks.
  • Leverage the broader JLL Sustainability Platform.
  • Track and communicate success stories to ensure a high level of awareness and engagement is achieved with regard to the overall sustainability program.
  • Demonstrate innovative thinking and proactive management in bringing new ideas and solutions to the services delivery, and ensure they are rolled out effectively.
  • Develop and enhance systems and processes for delivering best practice sustainability performance and use of utility/sustainability management systems for monitoring and/or reporting purposes.
  • Provide expertise in building energy efficiencies, decarbonization, waste reduction and diversion practices, and electric vehicle charging reporting.
  • Own and manage Sustainability program delivery according to scope of work and schedule.
  • Provide SME input and own program components (e.g., content development, maintenance) related to SME area.

Requirements

  • University degree (Science, engineering, math, or related fields)
  • 10 plus years' experience in the sustainable operations, engineering of commercial buildings, building science, or related field
  • Technical understanding of common HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and building automation systems and their impact on sustainability goals
  • Advanced understanding of energy conservation measures and sustainability initiatives in commercial real estate
  • Strong operations experience in large multi-dimensional organization with focus on operations management, productivity, or engineering excellence and embody a bias for action
  • Strong communication and cross-collaboration skills, and ability to coordinate effectively with various stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience in influencing cross-functional teams including development and delivery of presentations and trainings
  • Excellent ability to build relationships with clients and their internal teams
  • A strong track record of strategic integration of sustainability into organizations' operations
  • Experience working in a collaborative way with clients and other stakeholders to develop and implement ambitious and robust sustainability programs, including tactical plans, processes, roadmaps, and procedures
  • Proven project management experience and excellent communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in written and numeric work
  • Ability to obtain buy-in and engagement from employees at all levels
  • Passionate about working towards a sustainable future
  • Experience in utility data analytics
  • Understanding of Greenhouse Gas Emission scopes and reporting

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree, demonstrating a mastery of building systems (HVAC, lighting, building management systems) and related sustainability aspects
  • Preferred applied experience in building auditing, commissioning, retrofit and design
  • Experience working with corporate clients, commercial property, property managers and an understanding of the landlord and tenant relationship is desirable
  • Advanced understanding of Greenhouse Gas Emission scopes and reporting
  • An excellent understanding of the advanced energy and sustainability issues for corporate occupiers of real estate including, but not limited to: decarbonization, embodied carbon, circularity, resource preservation, biodiversity, climate risk, health & wellbeing, and social value creation
  • Familiarity with municipal energy and sustainability regulations
  • Advanced experience with utility and waste data analytics
  • Experience with data centers
  • Experience with EV reporting
