About the position

The Senior Systems Administrator role at BAE Systems involves supporting internal customers by designing, implementing, and managing lab infrastructure. The position requires building, configuring, administering, and troubleshooting Linux servers and user workstations, as well as designing workgroup-scale networks. The role emphasizes maintaining system security, performance, and uptime while collaborating with various teams to develop automation strategies and deployment processes.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and manage lab infrastructure to meet customer requirements.
  • Build, configure, administer, and troubleshoot Linux servers and user workstation hardware and software.
  • Design and implement workgroup-scale networks.
  • Manage authentication, file-share, and collaboration servers for heterogeneous client systems.
  • Develop and apply hardening steps for systems for classified use according to NISPOM Chapter 8 and JAFAN standards.
  • Document system configurations for new and existing systems.
  • Proactively maintain and develop all Linux infrastructure technology to ensure 24x7x365 uptime service.
  • Engineer systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
  • Monitor system performance and capacity planning.
  • Manage software upgrades, patches, and hot fixes on servers and workstations.
  • Create and modify scripts or applications to perform tasks.
  • Collaborate with other teams to develop automation strategies and deployment processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience as a Linux Administrator.
  • Experience in enterprise-level Windows Server environments, including Active Directory and Group Policy Management.
  • CompTIA Security+ certification or equivalent is required for some customer labs.
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux distributions such as RedHat, CentOS, and Debian.
  • Hands-on experience with MySQL and/or MariaDB.
  • Familiarity with VMWare and SAN management concepts.
  • Expertise in Shell, Perl, and/or Python scripting.
  • Solid knowledge of protocols such as DNS, HTTP, LDAP, SMTP, and SNMP.

Nice-to-haves

  • Additional Linux certifications (RHCT, RHCE, LPIC) are advantageous.
  • Experience with monitoring solutions applications like Zabbix.
  • Experience with Ansible, Docker, and Kubernetes.
