About the position

The Senior System Administrator, Linux at BAE Systems is responsible for supporting internal customers by designing, implementing, and managing lab infrastructure. This role involves building, configuring, administering, and troubleshooting Linux servers and user workstations, as well as managing workgroup-scale networks and collaboration servers. The position requires proactive maintenance of Linux infrastructure to ensure high availability and performance, along with collaboration with security staff to ensure compliance with standards for classified systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support internal customers by designing, implementing, and managing lab infrastructure.
  • Build, configure, administer, and troubleshoot Linux servers and user workstation hardware and software.
  • Design and implement workgroup-scale networks.
  • Build and manage authentication, file-share, and other collaboration servers.
  • Develop and apply hardening steps for systems for classified use.
  • Document system configuration for new and existing systems.
  • Maintain and develop all Linux infrastructure technology for 24x7x365 uptime service.
  • Engineer systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
  • Maintain best practices on managing systems and services across all environments.
  • Monitor system performance and capacity planning.
  • Manage software upgrades, patches, and hot fixes on servers and workstations.
  • Create and modify scripts or applications to perform tasks.
  • Provide input on improving stability, security, efficiency, and scalability of the environment.
  • Collaborate with other teams to develop automation strategies and deployment processes.
  • Respond to outages and participate in service restoration efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience as a Linux Administrator.
  • Customer service oriented with attention to detail and self-motivated.
  • Experience in enterprise level Windows Server environments, including Active Directory and Group Policy Management.
  • CompTIA Security certification (or equivalent) is required for some customer labs.
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux distributions such as RedHat, CentOS, and Debian.
  • Hands-on experience with MySQL and/or MariaDB.
  • Familiarity with VMWare and SAN management.
  • Expertise in Shell, Perl, and/or Python scripting.
  • Solid knowledge of protocols such as DNS, HTTP, LDAP, SMTP, and SNMP.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • CompTIA Security CE certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a similar relevant degree.
  • Experience with monitoring solutions applications like Zabbix.
  • Experience with Ansible, Docker, and Kubernetes.
