About the position

The Senior System Administrator role at BAE Systems involves supporting internal customers by designing, implementing, and managing lab infrastructure. The position focuses on building, configuring, administering, and troubleshooting Windows and Linux servers, as well as user workstation hardware and software. The role requires collaboration with security staff to ensure compliance with standards for classified systems and involves proactive maintenance of Linux infrastructure to ensure high availability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and manage lab infrastructure to meet customer requirements.
  • Build, configure, administer, and troubleshoot Windows and Linux servers.
  • Design and implement workgroup-scale networks.
  • Manage authentication, file-share, and collaboration servers for heterogeneous client systems.
  • Develop and apply hardening steps for classified systems in compliance with NISPOM and JAFAN standards.
  • Document system configurations for new and existing systems.
  • Maintain and develop Linux infrastructure technology for 24x7x365 uptime service.
  • Engineer systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
  • Maintain best practices for managing systems and services across all environments.
  • Analyze logging information for performance exceptions and fault finding.
  • Proactively monitor system performance and capacity planning.
  • Manage software upgrades, patches, and hot fixes on servers and workstations.
  • Create and modify scripts or applications to automate tasks.
  • Provide input on improving stability, security, efficiency, and scalability of the environment.
  • Collaborate with teams to develop automation strategies and deployment processes.
  • Respond to outages and participate in service restoration efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience as a Linux Administrator.
  • In-depth knowledge of Windows Server and Linux distributions (RedHat, CentOS, Debian).
  • Hands-on experience with MySQL and/or MariaDB.
  • Familiarity with VMWare and SAN management concepts.
  • Expertise in Shell, Perl, and/or Python scripting.
  • Solid knowledge of protocols such as DNS, HTTP, LDAP, SMTP, and SNMP.
  • Additional Linux certifications (RHCT, RHCE, LPIC) are advantageous.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • CompTIA Security CE certification.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a similar relevant degree.
  • Experience with monitoring solutions applications (Zabbix).
  • Experience with Ansible, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Active Directory.
