About the position

The Senior Systems Engineer - Hardware Systems position at Aurora is a pivotal role within the Hardware Systems Engineering team, focusing on the development and integration of safety- and mission-critical hardware and software systems for self-driving technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for defining requirements at various levels, including system, subsystem, and hardware module levels, in collaboration with internal stakeholders, external OEM partners, and suppliers. A key focus will be on Thermal and allied systems, ensuring that all functional requirements are met through effective communication and collaboration with implementation teams across Electrical, Embedded, and Mechanical disciplines. In this role, the engineer will act as an owner of technical discussions, driving alignment on functional requirements and managing requirement traceability and decomposition. The candidate will also be tasked with developing system Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs) to identify requirement gaps and recommend necessary design actions. Writing design documents to evaluate new features and architectures will be essential, as will facilitating cross-functional system development activities among various teams, including systems, safety, software, embedded firmware, and hardware design. The engineer will develop verification and validation test plans, execute system-level testing, and perform log analysis to ensure coverage against existing requirements. Additionally, preparing and presenting technical reports for management will be a critical aspect of the role, requiring strong organizational and communication skills to coordinate effectively with both local and remote teams. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of working independently while thriving in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Define requirements at system, subsystem, and hardware module level in collaboration with internal stakeholders, external OEM partners, and suppliers, focusing on Thermal and allied systems.
  • Drive technical discussions to ensure alignment on functional requirements and work closely with implementation teams (Electrical, Embedded, Mechanical) to satisfy these requirements.
  • Provide rationale for requirements using first principles and data analysis in collaboration with subject matter experts.
  • Manage requirement traceability, decomposition, change control, and releases.
  • Develop system FMEAs to drive requirement gap analysis and recommend missing requirements and design actions.
  • Write design documents to evaluate new features/architecture, drive engineering reviews, and derive clear requirements and technical specifications.
  • Facilitate cross-functional system development activities among working groups, contributing to design reviews and producing high-quality documentation with traceability.
  • Develop verification and validation test plans and demonstrate coverage against requirements in collaboration with hardware and safety teams.
  • Execute system-level testing and perform log analysis (on CAN logs, autonomy logs) to ensure coverage against existing requirements and inform new requirements.
  • Prepare and present technical reports for management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Mechatronics, or Computer Science Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

  • 2+ years of industry experience in system test planning and execution (verification and validation).
  • Strong organizational abilities to drive and manage requirements end to end.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills to effectively coordinate with local and remote teams and quickly drive progress.
  • Strong experience in generating system and module level requirements, functional decomposition, dFMEAs, and MSRs.
  • Ability to complete system analyses to deep dive into technical problem statements and recommend paths forward using structured design documents.
  • Ability to quickly gain a deep understanding of system architecture and product specifications, including system redundancy designs and high availability systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Systems experience in autonomous driving technology and robotics.
  • Proficiency with electrical and communication bus debug and test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, JTAG tools, CANalyzer, thermocouples, etc.
