About the position

The Space Dynamics Lab (SDL) is seeking an experienced Spacecraft Systems Engineer to lead small satellite programs. This role involves overseeing the architecture, technical trades, risk tracking, and requirements management of satellite projects. The engineer will collaborate with project management to ensure technical requirements are met and will provide support for customer interactions and proposal efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the Project Manager as part of the management team, responsible for all technical aspects of the project.
  • May serve as the sole System Engineer on small projects, generally leading a systems engineering team.
  • Focus on leading the team and ensuring the delivery of the final product.
  • Mitigate risks while ensuring requirements are satisfied and verified.
  • Proactively identify technical problems through expertise and analysis.
  • Provide technical oversight of contractor requirements and development efforts.
  • Develop recommendations for risk reduction and future performance.
  • Lead, organize, and conduct trade studies, design analyses, and engineering analyses/studies to resolve issues.
  • Maintain technical relationships with internal and external customers, technical staff, and management.
  • Effectively communicate technical results, both verbally and in writing.
  • Lead cross-organizational project teams and mentor staff.

Requirements

  • BS degree in a related technical field (e.g., aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering with coursework in space engineering).
  • Understanding of core systems engineering principles, such as technical leadership, requirements management, configuration control, interface management, and verification.
  • Strong understanding of general systems engineering processes and specific processes related to small satellite development.
  • Understanding of Mission Assurance (MA) and Project Management roles and responsibilities.
  • 2-5 years of experience on similar projects or roles that provide relevant experience in space engineering processes.
  • Team lead/technical lead experience for a team of at least 3 for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Minimum 7 years of multi-discipline broad knowledge in the industry.
  • Familiarity with orbital mechanics, spacecraft requirements, and subsystems design.
  • Experience developing technical budgets for small satellites.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to present clearly to customers.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3+ years of relevant spacecraft systems engineering experience or advanced degree(s) in a related field.
  • In-depth familiarity with small satellites, systems requirements, and subsystems.
  • Experience with AGI's System Tool Kit (STK).
  • Familiarity with space vehicle and/or space systems development.
  • Experience testing aerospace hardware.
  • Experience leading small teams.
  • At least one full lifecycle of space systems lifecycle experience (may be accumulated through multiple projects).
  • Experience with requirements management and associated tools (e.g., DOORs).
  • Familiarity with MBSE and associated tools (e.g., Cameo).
  • Active Top Secret U.S. Government DoD security clearance.
