About the position

The Senior Systems/Hardware Engineer at Azenta is a pivotal role within the Automation Engineering team, responsible for leading the design and development of automated hardware systems. This position involves working on complex electromechanical mechanisms and drive systems, overseeing all phases of product development from concept to manufacturing and field support. The engineer will also mentor junior engineers and may have opportunities to transition into a management role overseeing a small team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cradle-to-grave design of automated hardware systems, focusing on electro-mechanical mechanism design.
  • System architecture design, component selection, and schematic design.
  • Ensure adherence to Azenta's product development process, including requirements and specification generation, and test protocol creation.
  • Key contributor to Design Verification Testing (DVT) efforts, including creating test protocols, procedures, and final reports.
  • Conduct risk analysis activities, including Design Failure Modes Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Create requirements traceability documentation to demonstrate design inputs are adequately traced to outputs and tests.
  • Develop required documentation during development and transfer to production, including models, detail drawings, diagrams, BOM, and assembly procedures.
  • Engage in hands-on assembly, troubleshooting, debug, and qualification of subsystems and components.
  • Project management ensuring adherence to project schedule and budget, while managing additional resources when necessary.
  • Communicate with suppliers to support new product design and sustaining efforts.
  • Lead and contribute to design reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of design experience with products or equipment involving significant robotics, electromechanical mechanisms, or automation.
  • Completed a minimum of 2 product life cycles (from concept to production) as a key contributor.
  • Functional user of SolidWorks MCAD or equivalent 3D MCAD program.
  • Working knowledge of DFM principles with a focus on machining and fabrication processes applicable to low volume manufacturing.
  • Systems level understanding of low-voltage AC/DC circuits, component selection, and circuit diagrams.
  • Practical understanding of fluid flow, thermal, and structural design considerations.
  • Demonstrated capability to perform engineering analysis and familiarity with commonly used analysis tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Design of hardware for use in ultra-low temperature environments (-80C).
  • Expertise or familiarity with industrial robots, vision systems, end-effectors, etc.
  • Familiarity with software programming (C#, C++, Java, Python, .NET, etc.).
  • Familiarity with CAN bus and its protocols.
  • Good understanding of motion controllers.
  • Statistics and reliability analysis.
  • ISO 13485 and FDA/cGMP experience.
