About the position

The Senior Systems Engineer at Azenta is a pivotal role within the Automation Engineering team, responsible for leading the design and development of automated hardware systems. This position involves working on complex electromechanical mechanisms and drive systems, contributing to all phases of product development from concept to manufacturing and field support. The role also includes project management responsibilities and opportunities to mentor junior engineers, with potential growth into a management position.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cradle-to-grave design of automated hardware systems, focusing on electro-mechanical mechanism design.
  • Design system architecture, component selection, and schematic design.
  • Ensure adherence to Azenta's product development process, including requirements generation and test protocol creation.
  • Contribute to Design Verification Testing (DVT) efforts, including creating test protocols and final reports.
  • Conduct risk analysis activities, including DFMEA and FTA.
  • Create requirements traceability documentation to demonstrate design inputs are traced to outputs and tests.
  • Develop documentation during development and transfer to production, including models, detail drawings, and assembly procedures.
  • Engage in hands-on assembly, troubleshooting, and qualification of subsystems and components.
  • Manage project schedules and budgets, sometimes overseeing additional resources.
  • Communicate with suppliers to support new product design and sustaining efforts.
  • Lead and contribute to design reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of design experience with products or equipment involving robotics, electromechanical mechanisms, or automation.
  • Completion of a minimum of 2 product life cycles from concept to production as a key contributor.
  • Functional user of SolidWorks MCAD or equivalent 3D MCAD program.
  • Working knowledge of DFM principles applicable to low volume manufacturing processes.
  • Systems level understanding of low-voltage AC/DC circuits and component selection.
  • Practical understanding of fluid flow, thermal, and structural design considerations.
  • Demonstrated capability to perform engineering analysis and familiarity with analysis tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Design of hardware for ultra-low temperature environments (-80C).
  • Expertise or familiarity with industrial robots, vision systems, and end-effectors.
  • Familiarity with software programming languages such as C#, C++, Java, Python, .NET.
  • Familiarity with CAN bus and its protocols.
  • Good understanding of motion controllers.
  • Statistics and reliability analysis experience.
  • ISO 13485 and FDA/cGMP experience.
