About the position

The Senior Tax Accountant position is a critical role within a company specializing in the development, ownership, and management of select-service hotels. This organization is dedicated to creating, acquiring, and managing hotels that are typically branded under well-known names such as Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt. The company operates across various aspects of the hospitality industry, including hotel construction, renovation, and day-to-day management. Their mission is to deliver exceptional guest experiences while achieving strong financial performance through strategic investments and operational excellence. As a Senior Tax Accountant, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with various tax regulations and managing tax-related tasks for multiple entities across different states. This role requires a strong accounting and audit background, as well as the ability to problem-solve discrepancies in tax collection. The position is permanent and requires 100% onsite work from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. You will be expected to handle sales and use tax compliance, property tax management, occupancy tax reporting, and miscellaneous tax filings, among other responsibilities. Your expertise will also be crucial in tax issue resolution, regulatory compliance, exemption certificate management, audit preparation, and reconciliation support.

Responsibilities

  • Calculate and file Sales and Use Tax returns for multiple entities across various states.
  • Ensure accurate and timely tax filings to meet state-specific deadlines.
  • Track and manage Property Tax payments for numerous properties in different states.
  • Maintain a detailed record of property tax obligations and payments.
  • Calculate and file Occupancy Tax returns for operating hotels under the company's management.
  • Ensure compliance with local occupancy tax regulations.
  • Calculate and file other required taxes, including gross receipts tax, excise tax, and business & occupation tax.
  • Stay informed on changing tax laws and apply them accordingly.
  • Research tax issues arising from collection rate and exemption allowance discrepancies.
  • Provide resolutions and ensure compliance with tax laws.
  • Interpret and comply with state and local statutes, regulations, and legislation.
  • Provide guidance to the Tax Accountant and Hotel Management based on thorough research of tax laws and regulations.
  • Manage and validate exemption certificates to ensure compliance with applicable tax laws.
  • Prepare for and assist with sales and use tax audits.
  • Provide necessary documentation and support during audit processes.
  • Maintain and update the tax service setup to ensure ongoing compliance with state and local tax laws.
  • Regularly review and adjust processes to enhance efficiency and tax compliance.
  • Assist with the reconciliation of tax-related general ledger accounts.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting and/or sales and use tax.
  • Preferred: 4 or more years of experience in accounting with a focus on tax filing.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Excel and other relevant software.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Proven track record of managing multiple tasks and maintaining accuracy.
  • Experience working in a multi-state, multi-unit environment.
  • Understanding of diverse state tax regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
