About the position

The Senior Technical Specialist for EBNN Research Operations and CMAS Science Support at Brookhaven National Laboratory plays a crucial role in supporting daily operations within the Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science and Nonproliferation (EBNN) Directorate. This position involves providing operational support for scientific research equipment, assisting in field experiments, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The specialist will work closely with a diverse scientific community to address modern challenges such as environmental justice and renewable energy generation.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a Research Space Manager for a large scientific building within EBNN.
  • Assemble standard operating procedures for scientific research equipment.
  • Install, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair scientific research equipment.
  • Assist the CMAS Group with planning field experiments, including market research and procuring supplies.
  • Participate in field work and ongoing operations, including driving mobile laboratory trucks and maintaining equipment.
  • Setup data transfer protocols and organize data in a database and online repositories.
  • Maintain BNL's policies for safe research conduct by completing required safety training and following procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years work experience, or a technical institute certification with 6 years experience, or 8 years relevant work experience.
  • Ability to read and carry out instructions from a manual and onsite leadership.
  • Good mechanical skills with basic hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools.
  • Ability to perform web-based market research and summarize findings.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Basic computer programming skills and experience with Microsoft Office products.
  • Valid NYS Driver's license and ability to drive a truck for long durations.

Nice-to-haves

  • BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience, or a technical institute certification with 8 years experience, or 10 years relevant work experience.
  • Experience with Work Planning and Control.
  • Experience with dataloggers, databases, and organizing observational data.
  • Field deployment experience.
  • Working knowledge of safety codes and standards related to mechanical and electrical work.
  • Experience with meteorological and climate sensing equipment.
  • Experience with weather and climate data analysis.
  • Experience and training with operating a fork-lift.
  • Drone pilot skills or ability to acquire requisite training.
