About the position

The Senior Technical Writer and Content Strategist position at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is a pivotal role that involves shaping ideas and addressing structural challenges in writing. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about crafting engaging content and have a strong background in technical writing and editing. The successful candidate will work closely with leaders in software engineering, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) on projects that are significant to the Department of Defense (DoD), government agencies, and private industry. In this role, you will be responsible for editing formal technical reports, tailoring your work to meet the specific requirements of each project, which may include substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading. You will also write and edit brief articles, marketing materials, web content, video scripts, and other electronic media. Collaboration is key, as you will act as a consultant or co-writer with subject-matter experts, helping them to capture and communicate their research effectively. Additionally, you will suggest innovative ways to present content and repurpose it for various media formats. Your work will involve close coordination with SEI's Communication Design, Web Services, Public Relations, and Outreach teams to produce high-quality publications, presentations, web pages, information graphics, and event materials. You will be expected to plan, manage, schedule, and track your project tasks efficiently, ensuring that all deadlines are met while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Responsibilities

  • Edit formal technical reports, tailoring work for each project based on requirements, schedule, and budget.
  • Write and edit brief articles and marketing materials.
  • Write and edit web content, video scripts, and content for other electronic media.
  • Act as a consultant or co-writer with subject-matter experts to capture information about their research and develop content.
  • Suggest ways to present content in documents and repurpose it for other media.
  • Collaborate with SEI Communication Design, Web Services, Public Relations, and Outreach teams on various publications and presentations.
  • Plan, manage, schedule, and track project tasks.

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience in technical writing and editing or a related discipline.
  • Excellent document planning, writing, substantive editing, and copyediting skills.
  • Strong commitment to customer service for subject-matter experts while advocating for their readers.
  • Keen eye for detail and a strong focus on quality and adherence to a style guide.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • Social skills to interview subject-matter experts and work closely with them to develop written materials.
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work with minimal or no supervision while participating in team decision making.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in writing for government or defense-related projects.
  • Familiarity with content management systems and web publishing tools.
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles for creating information graphics.
