The Senior Traffic Engineer position is based in the Kansas City office and requires a candidate with at least 8 years of experience. The successful candidate will work on a variety of complex projects, collaborating with colleagues who are enthusiastic about design and engineering analysis. The Traffic Team is involved in projects that include design alternative analyses, engineering studies, traffic analyses, safety studies, travel demand modeling, and the design of traffic signals, signage, pavement markings, and lighting. The role emphasizes teamwork with colleagues in highway, bridge, stormwater, and utility design, striving for innovation and ingenuity to provide optimal outcomes for all transportation users. Key responsibilities include planning, conducting, and coordinating traffic engineering work, preparing reports, plans, and specifications for design projects, and monitoring multiple project schedules and budgets. The candidate will also be responsible for preparing and directing traffic analysis and studies, including safety studies, and completing design and plan preparation of traffic signal and interconnect drawings. The role requires the ability to work independently or as part of a team, ensuring compliance with engineering principles and client contract requirements, while also mentoring entry-level engineers and maintaining quality control and assurance guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Join the Traffic Team under the Government Design Division Leader for the Midwest.
  • Prepare and direct traffic analysis and studies, including safety studies.
  • Complete design and plan preparation of traffic signal and interconnect drawings.
  • Plan and develop engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems.
  • Work independently, as a team member or lead, to execute specific phases or aspects of projects.
  • Review project design for compliance with engineering principles and client contract requirements.
  • Coordinate activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and manpower.
  • Evaluate and approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Develop project scope of work, estimate manpower needs, prepare CPM schedules, and track project progress.
  • Advocate for and mentor entry-level engineers.
  • Maintain liaison with individuals and units within or outside the organization on technical matters.
  • Plan and execute project meetings.
  • Ensure project meets quality control and quality assurance guidelines.
  • Interpret changes in the contract and advise management on needed changes.
  • Maintain professional and technical skills by attending educational workshops and participating in professional societies.
  • Assist in the preparation of business proposals.
  • Attend staffing meetings and work with Project Managers to balance workload.

Requirements

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in State of Kansas or Missouri with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Experience working with KDOT or MoDOT and other local transportation agencies.
  • Experience with traffic and safety analysis, knowledge of the MUTCD and Highway Capacity Manual.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete project deliverables.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and meet project deadlines.
  • Experience with traffic simulation software (Synchro, HCS, Sidra or VISSIM).
  • Experience with design of traffic control elements, plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic signals, roadway signing, and pavement markings.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with MicroStation CAD and MS Excel and Word; OpenRoads Designer preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) preferred.
