As part of our Marine Division, you will play a crucial role in underwriting new business and renewals, ensuring profitability while adhering to established guidelines and authority levels. In this role, you will utilize underwriting tools to accurately classify risks, determine rates, and set premium charges. A thorough understanding of state laws regarding cancellation and non-renewal is essential to ensure compliance in your transactions. You will also be responsible for mentoring and coaching new team members, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone can thrive. Engaging with brokers and art market influencers will be key to promoting Markel's Fine Art offerings and generating new business opportunities. Your participation in industry events will further enhance our brand presence and contribute to our growth in the domestic marketplace.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner according to authority level and established guidelines.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
  • Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business.
  • Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions.
  • Liaison on behalf of underwriting team with operations team.
  • Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers.
  • Mentor and coach colleagues and new team members.
  • Engage with brokers and art market centers of influence to promote Markel's Fine Art offerings and generate new business opportunities.
  • Attend both insurance industry and art market events to grow Markel's Fine Art brand.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7-10 years current Fine Art & Specie underwriting experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree required; Industry designation or professional degree preferred.
  • Desire and ability to improve Markel's position in the domestic marketplace through external engagement and communication.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that contribute to product line clarity.
  • Ability to deliver compelling presentations to any audience.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must be a collaborative, team player that can provide creative solutions to problems and enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment.
