About the position

The Senior Middle Market Senior Underwriter at Liberty Mutual Insurance is responsible for making critical decisions regarding the underwriting of business by utilizing analytical and data-driven approaches. This role involves assessing various policies, particularly those that are complex or of high individual line size, and determining the appropriate pricing for the associated risks. The underwriter will manage a portfolio of brokers, agents, and clients, leveraging their market presence and knowledge to develop and underwrite profitable business while representing Liberty Mutual in the marketplace. In this position, the underwriter will maintain and strengthen established relationships with agents and brokers, while also seeking to develop new connections. They will contribute to product development initiatives and participate in team projects aimed at improving processes and tools. A strong understanding of relevant legislation and regulations is essential, as is the ability to collaborate effectively across various teams and stakeholders, including Underwriting Support, Claims, and Actuarial departments. Additionally, the Senior Underwriter will mentor junior underwriters and new hires, providing guidance and support in their professional development. The role may also involve analyzing the department's portfolio to suggest areas for development and recognizing emerging trends within the line of business expertise. Responsibilities

  • Manages portfolio of brokers/agents and clients.
  • Leverages market presence and knowledge to develop and underwrite profitable business, acting as a representative for Liberty.
  • Maintains a strong market presence, including established relationships with agents and brokers.
  • Contributes ideas for product development and participates in development and execution.
  • Contributes to team projects (e.g., process/tool improvement).
  • Understands the work implications of relevant legislation and regulation.
  • Collaborates effectively across teams, stakeholders, and partners (e.g., UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in GRS North America).
  • Mentors junior underwriters and new hires (not as a line manager).
  • May analyze department's portfolio and make suggestions for development.
  • May recognize and communicate emerging trends of exposures within line of business expertise.

Requirements

  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required.
  • A minimum of 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related experience.
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
  • Competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process, and proficiency in the use of qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues.
  • Capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to manage or administer those issues.
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.
