About the position

The Senior Underwriter for Retail Property at Everest Insurance Company is responsible for developing a profitable book of business within a designated underwriting territory. This role involves strategic planning for growth, building brand awareness, and maintaining productive relationships with brokers. The position requires collaboration with various departments and mentoring junior underwriters, all while ensuring underwriting discipline and achieving financial goals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of a profitable book of business within the designated underwriting territory for Everest Retail Property.
  • Implement a growth plan for the region while creating brand awareness for Everest.
  • Build and underwrite a diverse and profitable book of business.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with appointed brokers.
  • Control pricing and risk selection standards to support strategic objectives and achieve financial goals.
  • Collaborate effectively with Actuarial, Claims, Loss Control, Operations, Finance, and Information Technology departments.
  • Mentor and coach underwriters both technically and professionally.
  • Maintain awareness of competitor capabilities and strategies, as well as the overall insurance marketplace.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business or related field, with insurance designations a plus.
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant commercial property underwriting experience.
  • Demonstrated skills to support leadership with strategies for a profitable portfolio.
  • Self-motivated and independent while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching skills.
  • Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in mentoring and coaching underwriters.
  • Strong analytical skills in dissecting risk and portfolio data.
  • Excellent sales and negotiating competencies.
